Cricetulus triton (Silk-haired mouse)

Japanese: キヌゲネズミ(絹毛鼠) - キヌゲネズミ（英語表記）Cricetulus triton

A rodent mammal of the Muridae family. It looks similar to a mouse (house mouse), but has a short tail and cheek pouches, and is a species of field mouse that is phylogenetically close to hamsters. It is noted as a species that phylogenetically connects the various species of the American Cricetinae subfamily with Old World hamsters. It is found in northeastern China, the Korean peninsula, and Ussuri. It is 18-25 cm long, with a tail length of 7-10 cm. Its back is dark brown, and its ventral side is a whitish gray. It lives alone, digging deep tunnels into the oak and hazel forests of the valleys to make its nest.
