Germany's largest liner shipping company. It was established in 1970 by the merger of the country's two largest liner shipping companies, the Hamburg American Mail Shipping Company (abbreviated as Haparc) and the North German Lloyd Steamship Company. Before the merger, Haparc (founded in 1847) and North German Lloyd (founded in 1857) both had long histories and prospered by transporting immigrants from Europe to America. Until World War I, they competed with British shipping companies for dominance in liner shipping routes around the world. They were subsequently destroyed in two world wars, but were able to recover and develop thanks to their progressive management strategies and effective government shipping policies based on their long-standing traditions, and became known as the two largest liner shipping companies representing German shipping.
