1839‐1912 Egyptian playwright and journalist. Pen name Abū Naḍḍāra. Also known as James Sanua. Born in Alexandria to a Jewish family, he studied in Italy. He published a satirical newspaper and performed in theater, and engaged in political agitation, sharply criticizing the throne of the viceroys under Muhammad Ali and the advance of Europeans. He joined a secret society as a Freemason and cooperated with Afghani and others. He was expelled in 1878, and thereafter promoted the Egyptian national movement through his writing in Paris.
