It was founded around 830 to house the remains of St. Mark (who later became the patron saint of Venice), who had been stolen from Alexandria by Venetian merchants. It was destroyed by fire in 976 during civil war, rebuilt in 978, and the current cathedral (1063-73) was built in the 11th century by the then governor, Domenico Contarini (in office 1043-70).
