Born: February 23, 1818 in Reggio Emilia Died April 17, 1882. Turin, Italy. Entered the Municipal School of Fine Arts in Reggio in 1832. Participated in the First Italian War of Independence in 1847, and lived in Geneva after being discharged. He often traveled around Europe, coming into contact with new trends in painting, but was particularly influenced by the Barbizon School's depictions of nature that he discovered during a trip to France in 1855, and the expression of light by Turner and Constable during his stay in London from 1865 to 1866. He established a unique style of painting that exudes delicate poetry in his depictions of nature that capture the subtle effects of light. Returned to Italy in 1866, became principal and professor of the School of Fine Arts in Lucca in 1868, and professor of landscape painting at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin in 1869. Invited by the Meiji government when the government-run Kobu Bijutsu Gakko (Technique School) was founded in 1876, he taught in Japan until 1878. Although he only stayed there for two years, he nurtured many artists, including Chu Asai, Shotaro Koyama, and Hisashi Matsuoka, and contributed greatly to the development of Western-style painting in Japan. In 1879, he returned to his position as professor at the Albertina School of Fine Arts, but his health deteriorated and he died four years later. His major works include "Wading" (1861), "October Morning" (1862, National Gallery of Modern Art, Rome), "Before the Storm" (1874), "Spring Sun" (1875-76), and "Evening on the River Po at San Mauro" (1880-81, Galleria Civica d'Art Moderna, Turin).
