Three monks - Sanninhoshi

A story from the Muromachi period. Two volumes. Author unknown. A tale of repentance and awakening by three Koya saints. In the first story, Kasuya Shirozaemon, who accompanied Ashikaga Takauji when he was shogun, became a monk after his beloved wife was brutally murdered. At the end of the year, Aragoro, a robber, was blamed by his wife and returned after attacking and killing a noblewoman. The wife even went out to cut the woman's hair. In the second story, Aragoro was awakened by the depth of his sins. The story is about Shinozaki Rokurozaemon, whose father committed seppuku to sacrifice himself for Kusunoki Masashige, but when his lord surrenders to Ashikaga, he becomes a monk and begins training. Upon hearing of his wife's death and the surviving child, he climbs Mount Koya. This work is based on the reality of the Middle Ages and is made up of three chapters (in the same style as "Saigyo Monogatari"). It follows in the footsteps of "The Tale of the Night Wake at Kitano," volume 35 of "Taiheiki," and is a forerunner of the early Edo period kana zoshi "Seven Bhikkuni" and Ozaki Koyo's "Two Bhikkuni Irozange."

室町期の物語。2巻。作者不詳。3人の高野聖(こうやひじり)の懺悔(ざんげ)による発心譚(ほっしんたん)。足利尊氏(あしかがたかうじ)が将軍時代、そのお供をしていた糟谷(かすや)四郎左衛門は恋女房が惨殺されて出家したという第1話。強盗荒五郎が、年末に女房に責められ高貴な女を襲い殺して戻ると、女房はその女の髪まで切りに出かける。その業(ごう)の深さに感じて発心したという第2話。父が楠木正成(くすのきまさしげ)に殉じて切腹したという篠崎(しのざき)六郎左衛門は、主君が足利へ降参したのを機に出家修行の身となったが、妻の死と遺児のことを耳にすると高野山に登ったという第3話（『西行(さいぎょう)物語』と同工）からなり、中世の現実を踏まえた作。『太平記』巻35「北野通夜物語」の系譜にたち、江戸時代初期の仮名草子『七人比丘尼(しちにんびくに)』、尾崎紅葉『二人比丘尼色懺悔(いろざんげ)』の先蹤(せんしょう)。
