A city in the Rostov Oblast in southwestern Russia. It is a port city on the Sea of Azov, about 60 km west of the oblast capital, Rostov-on-Don, overlooking Taganrog Bay. It began with the construction of a fortress and a naval base by Peter the Great in 1698, and developed as a grain shipping port in the 19th century. It is located south of Donbass (the Donets coalfield), and is now an important shipping port for the coalfield and industrial area. It also has industries such as steel (steel plates, steel pipes), machinery (boilers, combines, forging and pressing equipment), ship repair, leather, furniture, and food. There are universities of education and radio technology. It was Chekhov's birthplace, and his birthplace is now a memorial museum, as well as the Chekhov Theatre. Population: 257,692 (2010). ロシア南西部,ロストフ州の都市。州都ロストフナドヌーの西約 60km,アゾフ海のタガンログ湾にのぞむ港湾都市。 1698年ピョートル1世により要塞と軍港が建設されたことに始り,19世紀に穀物積出港として発展。ドンバス (ドネツ炭田) の南にあり,現在その炭田と工業地帯の積出港として重要。また鉄鋼 (鋼板,鋼管) ,機械 (ボイラ,コンバイン,鍛造・プレス設備) ,船舶修理,皮革,家具,食品などの工業が行われる。教育,ラジオ技術の各大学がある。チェーホフの生地で,その生家は現在記念博物館となっており,チェーホフ劇場もある。人口 25万7692(2010)。
