Japanese: 催乳薬 - さいにゅうやく（英語表記）lactogen

A drug used to promote milk secretion. The only one currently in clinical use is a prolactin preparation, extracted from the anterior pituitary gland. Although prolactin is a lactation hormone, the expression of its effects requires the involvement of various other hormones derived from the adrenal cortex, thyroid gland, ovaries, etc., so it is difficult to expect that the use of this preparation will have a lactation effect in all cases. In recent years, it has also been thought that oxytocin, secreted from the posterior pituitary gland, is also involved in the expression of the action of prolactin (this is a hormone that contracts the uterus, but also has the effect of ejecting milk stored in the breasts after childbirth).

乳汁分泌促進の目的で用いられる薬剤。現在臨床で用いられている唯一のものはプロラクチン製剤で，脳下垂体前葉から抽出して得られたものである。プロラクチンは催乳ホルモンではあるが，その効果発現には，副腎皮質，甲状腺や卵巣などに由来する各種の他のホルモンの関与が必要とされるため，この製剤の適用によってあらゆる場合に催乳効果を上げることは期待しがたい。また，近年，プロラクチンの作用発現には脳下垂体後葉から分泌されるオキシトシンも関係していると考えられるようになった(これは子宮収縮ホルモンであるが，分娩後の乳房に貯留した乳汁を射出させる効果も現す)。
