Saints Nouvelles (English)

Saints Nouvelles (English)
The title means "New Hundred Tales," and it is a collection of short stories that was completed around 1456-61, or at the latest by the death of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy (1467). It is said to have been told around the fireside by 35 narrators who were real people around the duke and his associates, and one anonymous editor, but the consistency of the notes and style in the work suggests that it was written by a single author or editor. In form, it imitates Boccaccio's Decameron, which was usually translated as "Sain Nouvelle" (One Hundred Tales) at the time, but the themes, narrative style, and character development are far from that of the Decameron, and it owes more to the short stories of fabliaux and the Florentine writer Poggio Bracciolini.
