An atoll in the Lalik Islands, west of the Republic of the Marshall Islands in the central Pacific Ocean. A series of small atolls form an excellent harbor with a wide lagoon inside, 25 km wide at its widest point and over 110 km long. It was a Japanese mandate territory, but after World War II it became a trust territory of the United States, and a naval air base was built there. → Related article Marshall Islands Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
