A port city in the Loire-Atlantique department in western France. Population 66,000 (1990). Located on the north bank of the mouth of the Loire River, the town prospered as a transit trader of tin since ancient times when it was called Corbilo. After merchants from Nantes renovated the port in 1856, it developed greatly as the outer port of Nantes. During World War II, it became a fierce battlefield as a German submarine base. After the war, the industrial and port area, centered on shipbuilding, was developed, and a bridge was built over the Loire River, but the port administration is under the control of Nantes.
