A story from the life of Jesus Christ, not explicitly mentioned in the canonical books of the Bible, but detailed in the New Testament Apocrypha Gospel of Nicodemus. Between his burial and his resurrection, Christ descends into limbo, rescuing the righteous who lived before he brought the gospel, and taking them to heaven. The word limbo comes from the Latin word limbus, meaning edge, and refers to a place where souls live, halfway between hell and heaven. Limbo includes the limbus patrum, or limbo of fathers, where the souls of righteous people who died before Christ live, and the limbus puerorum, or limbo of infants, where the souls of infants who died before baptism live.
