A city in central-eastern Mali. Capital of Gao prefecture. Located on the left bank of the Niger River, about 310 km east-southeast of Timbuktu. Famous as a key point on the route across the Sahara since ancient times, it was the capital of the Mali Empire and the Songhai Kingdom in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tomb and mosque of Askia Muhammad of the Songhai Kingdom remain. In 2004, Askia's tomb was registered as a World Heritage Site. It is a distribution center for rice, millet, potatoes, and beans, and exports butter, wool, leather, livestock, etc. There is a river port and a domestic airport. Population 54,874 (1987 estimate).
