A game of collecting shells in a lagoon at low tide. The best time is April to May, and spring tides are the best. It is often held as a festival event on the third day of the third month of the lunar calendar (for example, in Kabushima, Aomori Prefecture). The word "hiyashi" appears in the Manyoshu, "going out to the ebb tide of Naniwa lagoon to cut clams," which shows that it has been practiced since ancient times. From Amami Oshima to Okinawa Prefecture, clam digging was called "hamaoroshi," and was a custom that was practiced only by women, as a taboo to prevent snakes from giving birth.
