Carnivora, Hyaenidae. Also known as the aardwolf. Body length 55-80cm. Similar to the striped hyena, but with a small, pointed snout and weak jaws. Long, slender front and back legs, pointed ears, and a well-developed mane from neck to tail. A timid animal, it hides in holes dug by aardvarks during the day and eats mainly termites and other insects at night. Because its teeth are small and its biting power is weak, it cannot eat carrion along with the bones like other hyenas. It lives in the savannas from eastern to southern Africa, either alone or in pairs.
