It is a large family that is distributed widely in tropical and subtropical regions around the world and includes about 130 genera and 2,300 species, and belongs to the Magnoliales order (Figure). All of them are woody, evergreen trees, shrubs, or vines, with only a few that are deciduous and grow in temperate zones, such as the pawpaw.
