...The oldest observation in Japan is found in Volume 3 of the Montoku Jitsuroku, which states, "On the first day of the first year of the Jinshu era (December 2, 851), the sun was dormant and there was a sunspot in the middle, like Li Zi."
[Modern Observations with Telescopes]
Telescopic observations began in 1611 by four men: J. Fabricius, G. Galilei, C. Shiner, and T. Harriot (1560-1621). The results were published in G. Galilei's Letter on Sunspots (1613) and C. Shiner's Rosa ursina sive sol (1626-30).
