Puerperal psychosis

Japanese: 産褥精神病 - さんじょくせいしんびょう（英語表記）puerperal psychosis

This is a general term for psychotic states that occur during the postpartum period, especially from a few days to a few weeks after childbirth. If it occurs later, it is also called lactation psychosis. Possible causes include endocrine changes associated with childbirth, mental and physical fatigue, and the psychological state of the postpartum woman. The psychiatric symptoms that tend to appear are depression, confusion, hallucinations/delusions, and amentia. In principle, it is a reversible condition with a good prognosis, but if the psychotic state accompanied by hallucinations and delusions persists, schizophrenia induced during the postpartum period is suspected.

産褥期，とくに出産後数日から数週の間に生ずる精神病状態を総称していう。その後発症する場合には授乳期精神病とも呼んでいる。原因としては，出産に伴う内分泌的変化，心身の疲労，産婦の心理状態などが考えられている。発現しやすい精神症状は，抑鬱（よくうつ）状態，錯乱状態，幻覚･妄想状態，アメンチアであり，原則としては可逆性の病態で予後も良いとされているが，幻覚や妄想を伴う精神病状態が遷延する場合には産褥期に誘発された精神分裂病が疑われる。
