...The law also provides for the creation of nature reserves for the purpose of protecting specific groups of flora and fauna. Switzerland has only one national park, which is blessed with beautiful natural scenery and is located along the border with Italy at an altitude of 1,500 to 3,173 meters. This was established in 1914 as an alpine sanctuary, with the aim of preserving nature in its original state. It is a nature reserve in the strict sense of the word, as the topography, flora and fauna within the park are thoroughly protected and it is used only for natural science research.
