A town in Nakagami County, Okinawa Prefecture, located in the south-central part of Okinawa Island, bordering Okinawa City to the west. It is the center of the US military bases in Okinawa, and between Chatan Town to the south and Okinawa City to the east, Kadena Air Base, Okinawa's No. 1 Air Base, and Kadena Ammunition Depot are located, with the bases taking up more than 80% of the town's area. Houses are densely concentrated on the left bank of the Hija River, and the majority of the residents depend on the bases for their livelihood. Sugarcane and fruit trees are cultivated on the farmland within the military grounds. 15.12 ^km2 . Population 13,827 (2010).

沖縄島中南部，沖縄市の西に接する沖縄県中頭(なかがみ)郡の町。沖縄米軍基地の中心地で，南方の北谷(ちゃたん)町，東方の沖縄市との間に沖縄第１の嘉手納飛行場，嘉手納弾薬庫があり，基地面積は町域の８割以上。住宅は比謝(ひじゃ)川左岸に密集，住民の大半は基地に依存して生活。軍用地内の耕作地でサトウキビ，果樹を栽培する。15.12km²。１万3827人（2010）。
