Matthew Passion - Matthaeuspassion German

Matthew Passion - Matthaeuspassion German

This is a musical work for voice and orchestra based on the story of the Passion of Jesus Christ from the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament. Many masterpieces remain, but the most famous are those by Lassus and Victoria in the Catholic world, and by Schütz and J.S. Bach in the Protestant world. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (2 parts, 78 pieces) is particularly important as a work that represents the pinnacle of his religious music, along with St. John Passion (premiered in 1723). It is believed to have been composed during Bach's time in Leipzig (after 1723), and it has been confirmed to have been performed on Good Friday (April 15th) in 1729. The lyrics are chapters 26 and 27 of St. Matthew, with the addition of free verse by Henrič (pen name Picander). Although the musical elements are adapted from many of Bach's own cantatas, the tightness of the overall structure and the enormous scale are astonishing. This work is also important because it was revived by Mendelssohn in 1829, 100 years after its premiere, and marked the beginning of a revival of Bach in the 19th century.
