A word derived from the Latin word "columna" meaning "cylinder." By extension, it refers to the vertical columns in English newspapers, and moreover, often means columns of articles that are fixed in size and format. In Japanese newspapers, it refers to the regular contributed articles and commentary/brief reviews that are serialized in the same place every day. Representative examples include "Tensei Jingo" in the Asahi Shimbun, "Yoroku" in the Mainichi Shimbun (the oldest in Japan, published since 1902. At the time it was called "Kenteki" and later renamed), and "Hansha Techo" in the Yomiuri Shimbun. While editorials represent editorial opinions and cover important issues related to politics, economy, and society, columns can be about things happening in the city, nature, and even the changing of the seasons, and are often written by a single writer expressing his/her subjective opinion, making them more familiar to readers. Apart from academic boxed articles and set columns for contributions, in Japan columns dealing with current affairs are often written by editorial writers or editorial committee members who are employees of the newspaper, and are considered to share the authority and individuality of the newspaper. In contrast, in the United States, independent columnists who do not belong to any company have traditionally been active, and they compile information from unique sources and persuasive opinions into columns that they provide to each newspaper, and these columns are signed.
