This refers to a state in which both eyes remain facing in one direction. This can be either horizontal or vertical. Eye movement to the left and right (horizontal conjugate deviation) is controlled by neural circuits from the cerebral cortex to the pons and the horizontal conjugate deviation center in the pons, but if a lesion occurs anywhere in these pathways, horizontal conjugate deviation in a fixed direction becomes impossible, and the eyes remain pulled to the opposite side. This condition is called paralytic conjugate deviation. Lesions in the cerebral hemispheres, such as stroke, can cause this type of paralytic conjugate deviation, and the eyes often assume a position in which they are glaring toward the side with the lesion.
