〘Noun〙 A festival where the Emperor offers new rice to the gods of heaven and earth and also eats it himself. The main ritual is held on the second day of the Rabbit in November (or on the middle day of the Rabbit if there is a third Rabbit), when the Emperor visits the Shinkaden, the main hall of Chuwain, but if there is no visit, the Jingikan performs the ceremony. The first ceremony held after the Emperor's accession to the throne is called Daijosai, but in the past, the terms Niiname and Daijo were used interchangeably. After the Meiji Restoration and the adoption of the solar calendar, the festival date was set as November 23rd. Today, that date is Labor Thanksgiving Day and is one of the national holidays.
