A male god who appears in the ancient Egyptian creation myth. The god Shu and the goddess Tefnut, born to the primordial creator god (Atum "the perfect one" in the Heliopolis temple legend, later identified with the sun god Ra), combined to give birth to the god Geb and the goddess Nut. Geb represents the earth and married his sister, the goddess Nut, who represents the sky. At first, the two gods embraced each other, but their father Shu separated them, lifted Nut to the sky, and laid Geb on the earth; this scene is often depicted in tomb murals. Geb is sometimes depicted with a duck on his head, reflecting the idea that the earth emerged from an egg hatched from the primordial duck. The union of Geb and Nut gave birth to the god Osiris, the goddesses Isis and Nepthys, and the god Set, Osiris's brother. Geb is also called Seb or Keb (Cave) in Greek legends.
