Salamander sea urchin - Salamander sea urchin

Japanese: サンショウウニ - さんしょううに
Salamander sea urchin - Salamander sea urchin

A marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Echinoidea, family Salamanderidae. A dark green-brown sea urchin that lives on the gravel bottom of inland bays. The shell is 4 cm in diameter and the spines less than 1 cm long. The surface of the bare shell is engraved with numerous grooves and holes, resembling the bark of the Japanese pepper plant, hence the name. The spines vary in color, from black to bright purple-red, but always have horizontal stripes of varying shades. They are found in shallow waters south of central Honshu, the Indian Ocean, and the western Pacific Ocean. Closely related species include the northern salamander sea urchin T. hardwickii , which has black spines at the base, and the broad salamander sea urchin T. reevesii , whose anus opens by shifting outward from the center.
