Vermiculite (English spelling: vermiculite)

Japanese: ヒル石(蛭石) - ひるいし（英語表記）vermiculite

A mineral that stretches like a leech when heated rapidly, it is an intermediate between biotite, phlogopite, and vermiculite. It is formed by hydrolysis of biotite and phlogopite. It is called hydrous biotite when the constituent mineral biotite decomposes due to weathering of granite, potassium is leached out, and water is added to form hydrous biotite. The spacing of the basal plane of the layered crystal structure expands from 10 Å for biotite to about 14 Å due to hydration. It is composed of approximately (Mg,Fe) ₃ [(Si,Al) ₄ O ₁₀ ](OH) ₂ ･4H ₂ O, monoclinic crystals.

急熱するとヒルのようにのびる鉱物で，黒雲母，金雲母，バーミキュライトの中間型である。黒雲母および金雲母が加水分解して生じる。とくに，花コウ岩の風化などによって構成鉱物の黒雲母が分解してカリウムが溶脱し，水分が加わって加水黒雲母となった場合にこの名称で呼ぶ。層状組織をなす結晶構造の底面方向の間隔が，加水作用のため黒雲母の10Åより約14Åに膨張したものである。成分はほぼ(Mg,Fe)₃[(Si,Al)₄O₁₀](OH)₂･4H₂O，単斜晶。
