Kitahara ruins

Japanese: 北原遺跡 - きたはらいせき

This is a site from the middle Yayoi period located in Shimoichitakitahara, Takamori Town, Shimoina County, Nagano Prefecture. It is located on an alluvial fan below a river terrace cliff on the right bank of the Tenryu River, and has been known since the Taisho era as a site where ground stone arrowheads have been excavated. Excavations in 1970 and 1972 uncovered the remains of seven rectangular pit dwellings, and ground stone arrowheads from each dwelling were unearthed, revealing the actual state of stone arrowhead production. At the same time, numerous rectangular and axe-shaped hammered stone axes and hammered stone knives were found in each dwelling, leading researchers to assume that in addition to paddy rice cultivation in the alluvial fan some distance away, upland farming was active on the alluvial fan.

長野県下伊那郡高森町下市田北原にある弥生時代中期の遺跡。天竜川右岸の河岸段丘崖下の扇状地に立地し，大正年間から磨製石鏃の出土遺跡として知られていた。1970,72年の発掘調査で，7棟の長方形の竪穴住居跡を検出し，各棟とも各工程を含む磨製石鏃が出土して，石鏃生産の実態が明らかとなった。同時に各棟とも多数の短冊形や鉞（まさかり）形打製石斧や打製石庖丁が検出され，調査者はやや離れた天竜川沖積地の水稲耕作のほかに扇状地での陸耕が盛んであったと推定している。
