...The number of Gokenin in the middle of the Hoei period (1704-11) was about 17,360, including 153 people with 32,248 koku (excluding civil servants) who received stipends, 15,022 people with 438,652 bales of rice, 1,858 people with 87,646 koku of rice, 11 people who received fuchitori, and 316 people who received salary. There were three classes of Gokenin: fudai, nihanba, and kakaire (held by the shogun). Fudai were the descendants of those who were employed as Rusuiki Yoriki Doshin or other officers during the four generations from Ieyasu to Ietsuna, nihanba were the descendants of those who were employed as Nishimaru Rusuiki Doshin or other officers during the four generations, and kakaire were those who were employed as Oban Yoriki Doshin or other officers during the four generations and shogunate officials employed after the fifth generation who had the right to meet the Emperor....
