A former town in Yama District, northwest Fukushima Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous, with the main settlements developing in the lowlands of the Agano River in the south, through which the Ban'etsu West Line passes. The town produces rice, vegetables, and buckwheat. It is a base for climbing Mt. Iide in the north.
