Salamander - Japanese giant salamander

Japanese: サンショウウオ(山椒魚) - サンショウウオ
Salamander - Japanese giant salamander
A general term for amphibians in the Caudata order, which are classified as Caudata, Ambystomatidae, and Plethodontidae. They have long bodies and well-developed tails that remain throughout their lives even after metamorphosis. The largest are 20 cm long, while the smallest are about 10 cm long. Their body color is generally dark green-brown. They usually have four limbs of roughly equal size, with four fingers on the front limbs and five on the back limbs. They breathe through their lungs and moist skin, but some species that live in rapid currents, such as the Japanese giant salamander, lack lungs. They are extremely docile and nocturnal, hiding under damp fallen logs or stones during the day. They prey on small animals such as earthworms and insects, as well as fish eggs. They gather in the water during the spawning season, and fertilize externally. The larvae have external gills and a lateral line system, which disappear after metamorphosis, but some species, such as the axolotl, are known to mature as larvae. There are 15 species known in Japan, including the Japanese giant salamander (endangered (Ministry of the Environment's 4th Red List)) and the black salamander (near threatened (Ministry of the Environment's 4th Red List)), which are not found in the Ryukyu Islands. → Japanese giant salamander
