Died around 1240. Italian mathematician from Pisa. Fibonacci is an abbreviation of filius Bonacci (son of Bonacci), and is also known as Leonardo of Pisa. Little is known about his life. When he was a child, his father, a Pisan merchant, was appointed consul of Bugia in North Africa, so he accompanied his father to North Africa, and then traveled to Egypt, Syria, Greece, and Provence, learning various number notations and calculation methods, and discovering the merits of the Indo-Arabic numeral system. Two years after returning home (1202), he revised the mathematical book he wrote and published it in 1228 under the name of the Abacus. This book explains the principle of place value, how to use numbers in calculations, and describes commercial mathematics. It was widely read and helped to spread the Indo-Arabic numeral system to modern Europe. He was also protected by Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire, and exchanged mathematical problems and solutions with the scholars close to the emperor. His book "Book of Square Numbers" (25), dedicated to Frederick II, is an indispensable work in the history of number theory. He also wrote "Practical Geometry" (20), based on Euclid's "Elements".

イタリアの数学者。 Fibonacciは filius Bonacci (ボナッチの息子) を略した呼び名で，ピサのレオナルド Leonardo de Pisaとも呼ぶ。生涯について詳しいことは知られていない。子供の頃，ピサの商人であった父が北アフリカのブギアの執政官に任命されたので，父について北アフリカに行き，その後エジプト，シリア，ギリシア，プロバンスを旅行して種々の記数法と計算法を学び，インド・アラビア記数法の長所を知る。帰国2年後 (1202) に書いた数学書を 1228年に改訂，『算盤書』の名で出版した。この本は位取り原理の説明，演算の際の数字の使い方の説明のほか，商業数学を述べたもので，広く読まれ，近代ヨーロッパにインド・アラビア記数法を広げるのに役立った。彼はまた神聖ローマ帝国のフリードリヒ2世の保護を受け，皇帝の側近の学者たちと数学の問題や解法を交換し合った。 25年の著書『平方数の本』はフリードリヒ2世に捧げられた。この本は数論の歴史において見逃せないものである。このほかにユークリッドの『原本』に基づいて『実用幾何学』 (20) を書いている。
