Skiringssal

Skiringssal
A trading post in Norway during the Viking era. The introduction to the Anglo-Saxon translation (880s) of Orosius's History of the World by Anglo-Saxon King Alfred the Great includes an oral geography of Scandinavia by Outtar, a nobleman of Northern Norway at the time, which mentions a trading port in southern Norway, called Schiringes heale. This place was thought to have been in the Vestfold region from early on, but excavations since the 1950s have confirmed that the oldest trading post was in Kaupang in Vestfold.
