The birth canal is the part of the pelvic cavity through which the fetus and its appendages pass during childbirth. The birth canal is particularly important in humans because, as humans begin to walk upright, the connection between the lumbar vertebrae and the sacrum is not linear but is inclined at an angle of about 230 degrees, and the anterior wall of the birth canal is short and the posterior wall is long, forming a concave curve.
