A major French glass and building materials manufacturer. Headquartered in Paris. Founded in 1970 by the merger of glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain and steel pipe and building materials manufacturer Pont-à-Mousson. Nationalized in 1982 by the nationalization policy of the Mitterrand administration. Saint-Gobain began as the Royal Company of Saint-Antoine, established in 1655 by a monopoly charter from Louis XIV. In the 1960s, the company fell into financial difficulties due to its late introduction of the float process for plate glass and its failure to diversify its operations.
