Hilarion

Japanese: Hilarion
Hilarion

[Origin of the monastery]
Anthony lived a long life of asceticism in the wilderness as a monk, as the original meaning of the word suggests, and his asceticism was spread deep into Western Gaul in the Life of Saint Anthony (356) written by Bishop Athanasius of Alexandria. His disciple Hilarion (c. 291-371) spread it to Palestine, and another disciple Makarios (c. 300-390) spread it to the Nile Delta. This was the beginning of the hermit-like tendency that is still deeply rooted in the Eastern Church today.
