A group of venomous snakes of the Elapidae family with beautiful stripes and strong neurotoxins. The Micrurus genus (illustration), which includes the majority of coral snakes, is found in the tropical regions of Central and South America, and the Arizona Micruroides genus is found in the United States and Mexico. They are small and slender, with total lengths of 50 to 100 cm, with a maximum of 120 cm. They have red, yellow, and black bands, and are very similar, with slight differences in the width of the bands. The bright colors of coral snakes are a warning color that stands out in nature, and most of them are active during the day.

美しい縞模様と強い神経毒をもつコブラ科の毒ヘビの一群。サンゴヘビ類の大部分の約48種が含まれるサンゴヘビ属Micrurus（イラスト）が，中南米の熱帯地方に分布し，アリゾナサンゴヘビ属Micruroides1種がアメリカ合衆国およびメキシコに分布する。小型で細長く全長50～100cm，最大でも120cmほど。赤色，黄色，黒色の帯模様をもち，きわめて類似しており，わずかに色帯の幅などが異なっている。サンゴヘビの鮮やかな色彩は，自然の中でよく目だつ標識色の一つの警告色であり，ほとんどが昼間に行動する。
