This refers to a topography in which reef limestone, formed by the accumulation and solidification of reef-building organisms, rises from the seafloor to the low tide level or close to it, creating a wave-breaking structure. The majority of reef-building organisms are reef-building corals, which have skeletons that can withstand strong waves due to the active secretion of calcium carbonate, and are known as scleractinian corals, including the Acropora, Acanthocorallia, Porites, and Pectinidae families. All of these belong to the same family as sea anemones, the Coelenterata. Other species include calcareous algae, sponges, and foraminifera.
