The capital of the southeastern state of Louisiana in the United States. Population 227,000 (1994). A river port located on the left bank of the Mississippi River, it is the center of the surrounding oil fields. Industries such as petrochemicals, synthetic rubber, aluminum, paper, machinery and equipment, and food processing are well developed here. A settlement was established at the same time as the construction of a French fort in 1719, and it became a British territory in 1762, a Spanish territory in 1775, and a U.S. territory in 1815.
