…A fossilized human discovered in the Arago Cave in the village of Toutavel in the Pyrenees-Orientales region of France in 1969-71. It is estimated to date to the Middle Pleistocene, the beginning of the Liss Glacial Period (about 300,000 years ago).

From the Paleolithic Period

…between 700,000 and 400,000 years ago, a culture characterized by hand axes of African origin (the Early Acheulean culture) spread across Europe. Many early man fossils have been found in ruins from this period, and the most famous is the early man skull excavated from the Arago Cave in southern France. The cave has yielded over 100,000 stone tools, including hand axes, as well as 50 early man fossil fragments.
