…In late January 1915, John Chilembwe (?-1915), an African Christian from Nyasaland (then a British protectorate, now Malawi), an inland region of southern Africa, and his party killed four white plantation owners and attacked an ammunition depot, but the rebellion was suppressed by retaliation from the colonial authorities. The motive for the rebellion was the worsening working conditions of the natives after the plantation owners brought in Mozambican workers, and the large-scale conscription of native soldiers by the British Army after the outbreak of World War I. …
