Wolfgang Sawallisch

German conductor and pianist. He made his debut in 1947 conducting "Hansel and Gretel" in Augsburg, and in 1957 conducted "Tristan and Isolde" at the Bayreuth Festival, becoming the youngest conductor in the festival's history. In the 1960s he served as principal conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Hamburg Philharmonic, and in the 1970s he served as music director of the Bavarian State Opera and principal conductor of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. As a pianist, he also had an outstanding track record in the fields of accompaniment and chamber music.

ドイツの指揮者，ピアニスト。1947年にアウクスブルクで《ヘンゼルとグレーテル》を指揮してデビュー，57年にはバイロイト音楽祭で《トリスタンとイゾルデ》を指揮し，同音楽祭史上最年少の指揮者として話題になった。60年代にはウィーン交響楽団，ハンブルク･フィルハーモニーの常任指揮者をつとめ，ひきつづき70年代にはバイエルン国立歌劇場の音楽監督，スイス･ロマンド管弦楽団の常任指揮者を歴任。一方，ピアニストとしては伴奏，室内楽の分野にすぐれた実績を残している。
