A Chinese literary figure in the mid-Tang Dynasty. Born in Taiyuan (Shanxi Province). His pen name was Zhitian. He was the younger brother of Bai Juyi. In 807, he passed the Jinshi examination and followed his brother to Jiangzhou, where in the 15th year of the same year he became the Left Collector and served as the Simen Yuan Wai Lang and Zhuke Lang Zhong. He is said to have had a 20-volume anthology, but it has since been lost and little is known about his poetry and prose. He is famous for the masterpiece of Tang Dynasty fantasy fiction, "The Story of Li Wa," which he wrote at the recommendation of Li Gongzuo, and also wrote "The Record of Three Dreams."

中国，中唐の文学者。太原 (山西省) の人。字，知退。白居易の弟。元和2 (807) 年進士に及第，兄に従って江州におもむいたが，同 15年左拾遺となり，司門員外郎，主客郎中を歴任。 20巻の別集があったというが現在は失われ，詩文はあまり伝わらない。李公佐のすすめで書いた唐代伝奇小説の傑作『李娃 (あ) 伝』が有名で，ほかに『三夢記』がある。
