A natural gas (soluble gas) field in the plains of northern Niigata Prefecture, stretching from Arakawa-machi, Iwafune-gun (now Murakami City) through Niigata City to Nagaoka City. It has an area of approximately 750 ^km2 and original reserves of approximately 100 billion ^m3 . It was used for domestic purposes from the mid-Meiji period onwards, but development progressed after World War II, reaching a daily production of 750,000 ^m3 at its peak in 1959. Currently, extraction is restricted due to land subsidence, and the field has developed into an undersea gas field 21 km off the coast of the Agano River.

新潟県北部，岩船郡荒川町（現・村上市）付近から新潟市を経て長岡市に至る平野部の天然ガス（水溶性ガス）田。面積約750km²，原始埋蔵量約1000億m³。明治中期以後家庭用に利用されていたが，第２次大戦後開発が進み，1959年のピーク時には日産75万m³に達した。現在は地盤沈下により採取が規制され，阿賀野川沖21kmの海底ガス田に進展している。
