A minority cultural group in the United States, the French residents living in southwestern Louisiana. The name Cajun comes from the anglicization of the French word Acadien, which means Acadian, which became Cajin. The first French people to settle in Acadia, a region in southeastern Canada, in 1604 were expelled in the 18th century during the colonial conflict between England and France (the Seven Years' War). After moving from place to place, they settled in the Louisiana marshes, which were then a French colony. Even after the region was annexed by the United States, they maintained their unique culture in isolation from the surrounding area. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
