…A member of the Ma'n family, a prominent Druze dynasty in Lebanon. The Ma'n family had held control over the mountainous region of southern Lebanon since his grandfather's generation, but Fakhr al-Din was a skilled political strategist, and by allocating himself to influential members of the Ottoman central government, he defeated his political opponents, including the Kurds, one after another, and achieved unified control over the entire region of Lebanon, including the coast.

...Moreover, because they were self-sufficient in terms of resources and economy, and could defend themselves, the inhabitants of the mountain regions were able to maintain their autonomy under any power. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the influence of the Druze Ma'n family extended to the interior of Syria and Palestine, and mountain Lebanon began to move toward political unification. In the first half of the 19th century, it was briefly under the control of the Muhammad Ali dynasty of Egypt, but around that time a new turning point was ripe.
