Kalhu

... In the first millennium BC, successive kings expanded their territories one after another, and art suddenly began to take on a more splendid appearance (Late Assyrian period). The 9th century BC conqueror Ashurnasirpal II (reigned 883-859 BC) built a new capital at Kalhu (now Nimrud) and constructed the large Northwest Palace. An alabaster guardian statue with a human face and a beast body was placed at the main entrance of the palace, and the area around the throne room and the central courtyard were decorated with numerous alabaster orthostats (pictorial stone slabs) with thin reliefs. ...

From Nimrud

…It is also used as the name of the capital city. The city's name in the Assyrian period was Kalhu, and in the Book of Genesis it is called Kara, built by Nimrod. In the mid-19th century, British A.H. Layard and others excavated the remains of the royal palace, and exhibited the reliefs and winged lion statues used in the palace decoration at the British Museum, causing a great sensation in Europe.
