In December 1941 (Showa 16), Japan entered the Pacific War by landing on the Malay Peninsula and attacking Pearl Harbor. The Japanese army advanced south through the Malay Peninsula with a "rapid advance," and in February 1942 occupied the British fortress of Singapore. Shortly after, the Japanese army began killing overseas Chinese, which is known in Chinese as "verification." "Verification" here refers to the Japanese army convening residents of specific areas at places such as schools, where the military police checked for "anti-Japanese elements," and abducting and killing those determined to be "anti-Japanese elements" into the mountains or on the coast.

1941年(昭和16)12月，日本はマレー半島上陸と真珠湾攻撃によって太平洋戦争に突入した。マレー半島を〈破竹の快進撃〉で南下した日本軍は，42年2月，イギリスの要塞シンガポールを占領した。その直後から，中国語で〈検証〉といわれる日本軍による華僑殺害が行われた。ここでいう〈検証〉とは，特定地域の住民を日本軍が学校などに集合させ，そこで憲兵隊による〈反日分子〉のチェックを行い，〈反日分子〉と断定された人々を山中や海岸に拉致し殺害したことをいう。
