Azaña y Díaz, Manuel
Born: January 10, 1880 in Alcalá de Henares
Died November 4, 1940. Montauban. A politician under the Spanish Second Republic. He studied law in Paris but initially devoted himself to writing. In 1930 he was a member of the Revolutionary Committee. In 1931 he was a Republican member of the Constituent Assembly. After the revolution he purged the military as Minister of War in the Provisional Government. He served as Prime Minister from 1931 to 1933 and implemented domestic reforms. With the victory of the Popular Front in 1936 he became president in May of that year, but after the outbreak of the civil war in 1939, when the victory of F. Franco and the military became decisive, he went into exile in France, where he died the following year.
