Anderson, J. (Freemason)

[The birth of modern Freemasonry and the expansion of its activities]
On the feast day of John the Baptist (June 24th) in 1717, four lodges (originally meaning "workhouses" for craftsmen at large construction sites) in London and Westminster were united under the leadership of Anthony Sayer into one great lodge as the "center of unity and harmony". Six years later, in 1723, Protestant pastor James Anderson compiled the "Constitution" and established the "Ancient Duties" as the moral code that Freemasons should observe. Incidentally, the organizational form of integrating the basic lodges into the higher-level great lodges has remained unchanged ever since, and even today there is one great lodge in each country of the world that oversees the local lodges below.
